I’m very pleased to announce Places, a significant new feature at DNA Painter. I’ve wanted to work with maps for a long time. This is not just because they’re visually striking, but because seeing ancestral locations mapped out makes it easier to understand my tree and where I came from. My goal is to provide a birds-eye view of a person’s ancestors that’s both beautiful and informative. Places does this by making use of information in the birth place field in your ancestral tree.
It has been a busy year! Here’s a reminder of some recently released features as well as a brief look back at some fun conferences.
As genealogists, we spend a lot of our time deep in family trees. I’ve spent so much time trying to build collateral lines down to the present day that my main tree now includes more than 6,000 people! By contrast, in your ancestral tree at DNA Painter, you extract just your direct ancestors. Among other benefits, this helps you summarize your entire ancestral inheritance in a single page that can easily be searched or shared. With the goal of making ancestral trees even more useful, compact and visually engaging, I’m pleased to announce three new features.
In this post I will explain how you can import GEDCOM and segment data into the site. As a reminder, DNA Painter does not use raw DNA data.
Within your ancestral tree at DNA Painter, ‘Show genetic ancestors’ will highlight those ancestors you’ve marked in this way. In this short article, I’ll discuss what ‘genetic ancestors’ are and explain how you can track them in your tree.

I am pleased to announce the launch of dimensions, a new feature within ancestral trees at DNA Painter. Ancestral trees allow you to extract and visualise your direct line in a tree, fan chart and text pedigree, all within one searchable page.
WikiTree is a collaborative family tree. I was honoured to be featured in the WikiTree challenge in January. As well as being fascinating, this experience has helped me to recalibrate how I plan to document future research.
A quick post to announce two updates to DNA Painter trees. These include mitoYDNA.org integration and the ability to view your tree with additional display options. Display options Under the settings cog/gear on the right there are now a number of display options. These give you the ability to view additional information within the tree
DNA Painter is known for chromosome mapping, but also includes ancestral trees, a useful interface for visualizing your family line (aka pedigree). To create your ancestral tree, you can select your GEDCOM file and have DNA Painter extract your direct line. Or if you prefer, you can enter it manually. Trees are private by default
